Audiences will be seeing double again (or triple) this holiday season as Netflix has announced that a sequel to the Christmas romantic comedy film “The Princess Switch” has been greenlit. Vanessa Hudgens will return to her double role of Duchess Margaret Delacourt and her doppelganger Stacy DeNovo for the follow-up that will be entitled “The Princess Switch: Switched Again”.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel, which will release in 2020, will follow Duchess Margaret as she suddenly inherits the throne to Montenaro and hits a snag in her relationship with Kevin Richards (Nick Sagar). It will be up to her twin Stacy to save the day before their new look-alike, party girl Fiona (also played by Hudgens) thwarts their plans. So the actress will be playing not two, but three roles in the new movie.

Netflix released “The Princess Switch” on Nov. 16, 2018, with the former “High School Musical” star playing a double role of a princess from the fictional nation of Belgravia and a young baker from Chicago. The film took cues from the classic story “The Prince and the Pauper” and gender-swapped the leads resulting in two new love stories. The film opened with a warm reception from viewers, so it’s not a surprise to see Netflix already getting to work on the sequel.

For a quick recap, the last film ended with Stacy getting married to Prince Edward (Sam Palladio) while Dutchess Margaret got together with Kevin.

Production for the upcoming follow-up will start next month in the U.K. Mike Rohl will be returning to direct the sequel along with screenwriters Robin Bernheim and Megan Metzger. As well as starring in the film, Hudgens will also be serving as an executive producer.

The newest flick is one of many movies coming to Netflix during the holiday season. The streamer is also releasing the romantic comedy “The Knight Before Christmas”, which also stars Hudgens, on Nov. 21. The actress can also be seen on the big screen with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reuniting for the upcoming “Bad Boys For Life” which comes out Jan. 17, 2020.
