  • ‘What is happening,’ host exclaims over election claims
  • Those on social media wonder about House and Senate races too
  • Fox, along with all other media outlets, called the race in favor of Biden

It’s a viral video from a news anchor expressing looks of disbelief over doubts Joe Biden appears to have won the election. And it came from none other than Fox News.

In a video that leaked Monday, Fox News anchor Sandra Smith is heard saying “What is happening?” with a confused expression while Cleta Mitchell, a former Republican member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives and a GOP activist, explains that, just because major news outlets like Fox News called the race for Biden, it doesn’t mean he won.

Smith gestured to anchor Trace Gallagher, who was interviewing guests on the Fox News panel. Smith says, "Trace, we've called it," meaning Fox News had called the election for Biden.

Basing their calls on state election results, all major news outlets, including Fox News, had called the presidential contest in favor of Biden. Smith’s reaction, however, was subject to debate on Twitter.

Biden, one respondent said, hadn’t “cleared the courts,” though it’s rare for a president to litigate his way into the White House. Another suggested Smith made a mistake by not assuming her microphone was on during a live segment.

In more general terms, some on social media wondered why Republicans were challenging the outcome of the presidential contest, but not the House or Senate.

Fox News has been criticized for carrying many of President Donald Trump’s questionable claims, though some of its anchors do grill top GOP officials. Smith had a heated exchange with Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel over whether the president had multiple tests confirming he was free of the novel coronavirus following a brief hospital stay in early October for COVID-19.

Trump himself has expressed disbelief over some of the polling data released by Fox News. A July poll from Fox News that showed Biden with a nationwide lead was described by Trump as "fake."
