Following the phenomenal success of “Westworld” on HBO, series creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are turning to the video gaming world for the next show that they are developing.

Nolan and Joy, under the banner of their Kilter Films brand, are developing a show based on the “Fallout” series of games for Amazon. The show has a commitment penalty attached, which means if Amazon executives approve the scripts, the show will go directly to series, Variety reports.

Created by Interplay Entertainment, the first “Fallout” video game was released in 1997 and was an open-world, turn-based, role-playing game with a post-apocalyptic setting. Set in the year 2161 after a nuclear war, “Fallout” spawned several games that have grown in popularity.

The most recent installment of the series is “Fallout 76,” a prequel to the entire series developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This game was released in 2018 and is Bethesda’s first multiplayer game.

The “Fallout” series is set in a world where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077. With their Amazon project, Nolan and Joy will look to bring “the harshness of the wasteland set against the previous generation’s utopian idea of a better world through nuclear energy,” to the small screen.

Nolan and Joy signed a blockbuster deal with Amazon last year after overseeing the massive success that “Westworld” has become on HBO for three seasons and counting. In “Westworld,” humans have created lifelike robots that inhabit a theme park allowing humans to live out their fantasies in a Western or cowboy-themed setting.

The duo will serve as executive producers alongside Athena Wickham for Kilter Films, with Todd Howard as an EP for Bethesda Game Studios, and James Altman for Bethesda Softworks. Lionsgate is also executive producing the series.

“‘Fallout’ is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios,” said Joy and Nolan in a joint statement as reported by Variety.

“Over the last decade, we looked at many ways to bring ‘Fallout’ to the screen,” said Todd Howard. “But it was clear from the moment I first spoke with Jonah and Lisa a few years ago, that they and the team at Kilter were the ones to do it right. We’re enormous fans of their work and couldn’t be more excited to work with them and Amazon Studios.”
