Princess Diana caught Prince Charles’ attention following a touching conversation.

According to royal biographer Andrew Morton in his book “Diana: In Her Own Words,” the romance between the Prince and Princess of Wales began following a heartfelt exchange.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles were in the home of Commander Robert de Pass, a friend of Prince Philip in July 1980. During their encounter, Princess Diana was seated next to Prince Charles on a bale of hay. Following their usual pleasantries, their conversation moved to Earl Mountbatten’s death and funeral.

Princess Diana told Prince Charles that he looked so sad during the funeral as he walked up the aisle. The People’s Princess described the scene as the most tragic thing she had ever seen and encouraged Prince Charles to be with somebody who could look after him.

“Her words touched a deep chord. Charles saw Diana with new eyes,” Morton wrote. “Suddenly, as she later told her friends, she found herself overwhelmed by his enthusiastic attentions.”

Morton added that Princess Diana was flattered and bewildered by the passion she aroused in Prince Charles who was 12 years her senior. From that time, their romance began to develop. Just months after the encounter, the pair announced their engagement.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana had a fairytale royal wedding in 1981. However, their married life was so different.

According to Paul Burrell, the future king was not always kind to his first wife. Whenever she asked her husband how she looked in her dress, he would often give her a harsh response.

There was a time when Prince Charles told Princess Diana that she looked like she belonged to the Mafia. In another encounter, the Prince of Wales compared his late ex-wife to a British-Caledonian stewardess.

Prince Charles also undermined Princess Diana in public and in front of dignitaries. He often demoralized her with his intellectual superiority.

According to Tina Brown in her book “The Diana Chronicles,” years after they exchanged vows, Princess Diana wanted to blow up her marriage. Princess Diana struggled with her unhappy marriage and found it absurd on how they should project an image of a happy relationship.
