The new Ghostbusters have officially called in help from the smallest Avenger, but that’s not all on the horizon for Paul Rudd.

Reported exclusively by Variety, and confirmed via video on Twitter, Rudd has officially been cast in director Jason Reitman’s new entry in the “Ghostbusters” series set to release in 2020. Little is known about the character Rudd will play, but Variety’s sources have said that he will be a teacher.

Rudd joins the already established cast of Carrie Coon (“The Leftovers”), Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”), and Mckenna Grace (“The Haunting of Hill House”), who will play a family at the center of the new sequel. Unlike the reboot from 2016, this new film will be a direct continuation of the original films, directed by Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman. As such, multiple members of the original cast are expected to return, with Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts having already confirmed their involvement.

“I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe,” Reitman said.

After his prominent role in “Avengers: Endgame” – currently the second biggest film of all time – Rudd has a smaller list of upcoming roles than some might expect. Aside from this new “Ghostbusters” film, his only other confirmed role is in the upcoming Netflix comedy series, “Living With Yourself,” which hails from “Little Miss Sunshine” directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Beyond that, a third “Ant-Man” has been rumored for Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 slate of films, but this is far from confirmed.

Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures will release Untitled Ghostbusters Project on July 10, 2020.
