Costance Wu’s upcoming movie, “Crazy Rich Asians,” will be released on Aug. 17, 2018.

The film is adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel of the same name. The story follows the life of Rachel (Wu), and American-born Chinese economics professor who will visit Singapore to meet her boyfriend Nick’s (Henry Golding) family.

To her surprise, Nick’s family belongs to the most affluent clan in Asia, and they’re also extremely rich. Other cast members include Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong, Gemma Chan, Sonoya Mizuno and more.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Crazy Rich Asians” will be released alongside “Captive State” starring John Goodman and Vera Farmiga, “Three Seconds” starring Rosamund Pike and Clive Owen, and “The Happytime Murder” starring Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy next summer.

In 2013, Kwan spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the complex relationships featured in his story.

“At the end of the day it really is about the complexity of relationships, both between Nick and Rachel, for example with their romance, and Michael and Astrid with their marriage, but also between Nick and his mother and Rachel and her mother and the struggles that I think modern Asians have kind of been living in an increasingly westernized world,” he said.

Kwan also said that “Crazy Rich Asians” is basically a story about three families, and Nick is in the center of it all. Rachel, on the other hand, serves as the guide in the story.

“Our guide being that we are these western readers entering this new world. Even though she is Chinese, she is American. She thinks she knows what it’s all about, and then she goes into the world and discovers that all of her misconceptions and all of her perceived ideas of Asians are challenged,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Forbes is predicting big things for “Crazy Rich Asians.” The publication claimed that it could be one of the most successful movies next summer. The publication noted that films released in August usually do well at the box office.

“Crazy Rich Asians” will be directed by Jon M. Chu and produced by Warner Bros.
