From getting their HRH titles stripped to having their statues separated from the rest of the British royal family’s, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s exit has seemed anything but well-received.

So why did Harry decide to leave it all behind? A source tells People that his wife Meghan and son Archie are at the heart of the separation. The 35-year-old reportedly began telling his network last fall that he needed to “put his wife and son first, and that it had been really hard.”

“He is obviously very devoted to her,” the unnamed friend added.

However, the source clarified that being independent is something that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex both equally desired.

“This is what Meghan and Harry have always wanted to create their own life,” the source said. “It’s got to feel like an immense relief to get out of the U.K. and go down their own path.”

As a result of the couple’s separation from his family, Harry’s honorary military positions, including his rank as Captain General of the Royal Marines, will be suspended. During his service, the prince participated in two tours of Afganistan.

“That’s 10 years of his life that he gave to serve his country, and he basically has to give it away now because he’s choosing to protect his family,” another source added.

Meghan accompanied her husband to a tribunal event for Britain’s armed forces, where he wore his red service uniform for the last time, on March 7. During the ceremony, the couple received a standing ovation from the attendees at Royal Albert Hall.

“That was very emotional for him,” the individual said. “It was really an incredible moment. It meant a lot to Harry.”

Meghan also showed her support for her husband by holding his hand throughout the ceremony.

“Deep down they are truly in love with each other, and what you see is truly who they are,” a source said.
