A new teaser may have hinted at a specific character’s death during Season 8 of “Game of Thrones.”  HBO

Fans know that more than a few of their remaining favorite characters will likely meet their end during the final season of “Game of Thrones,” and now, following the release of a new teaser, there seems to be a hint that the big battle for Winterfell will also be the end for some of the biggest characters still on the canvas.

The teaser, titled “Aftermath,” appears to show the remains of Winterfell after the highly anticipated battle against the Dead, led by the Night King (Vladimir Furdik). However, not only does the seat of Northern power look to be a ruin once again, but key pieces of some of the characters fans know will be there for the battle can also be seen scattered among the wreckage.

Pieces attached to specific characters that are seen in the clip include Tyrion’s (Peter Dinklage) Hand of the Queen pin, which lies abandoned in the snow, as does Jaime’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) golden hand. Also left abandoned are Arya’s (Maisie Williams) sword, Needle, Jon’s (Kit Harington) sword, Longclaw, and a chain that was previously used to hold Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) dragons.

However, while those pieces could be an indication that those characters will perish during the battle, it’s unlikely the show would obviously share the fates of so many major characters in a teaser clip. In addition, the feather attributed to the long-dead Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi) is also seen blowing in the wind, which could be an indicator that the various items are all there—but not proof of a character’s death.

While the characters themselves may not die, at least one of the pieces could be a hint about at least one fate, however. The chain, which was once used to hold Dany’s dragons, Viserion and Rhaegal beneath the great pyramid of Mereen, could be used to indicate that the dragons will be the ones who suffer during the battle for Winterfell.

Viserion already died beyond the Wall in Season 7 and has since been reanimated as the Night King’s own pet. Since he and Rhaegal were the dragons that were previously chained, the chain could symbolize that Viserion perishes again—this time for good, or it can mean that Dany will lose another one of her “babies,” and could be left with only Drogon in the end.

“Game of Thrones” premieres its final season beginning on Sunday, April 14 on HBO.
