Meghan Markle was recently criticized for altering the engagement ring that was given to her by Prince Harry in 2017.

Two years ago, the Duke of Sussex proudly revealed that he picked out the jewelry design himself, and it features two diamonds from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection.

During Prince Harry and Markle’s engagement interview with BBC, the former explained the design he chose for his wife’s ring.

“The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s her favorite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds on either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection, to make sure she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” he said.

One royal editor said that the Duchess of Sussex shouldn’t have updated the engagement ring because it is a piece of history and not just an accessory.

Ingrid Seward told The Sun that she thinks what Markle did to her engagement ring is a bit odd especially since the ring was designed for her by her husband.

“A royal engagement ring is a piece of history not a bit of jewelry to be updated when it looks old-fashioned,” she said.

Eagle-eyed royal watchers first noticed the difference between Markle’s old engagement ring and the updated one when she made an appearance at the Trooping the Colour earlier this month.

Originally, Markle’s engagement ring had a thick gold band with three diamonds. The new version has a much thinner, diamond-studded micro-pave gold band. As of late, the reason behind the “Suits” alum’s decision to update the look of her engagement ring hasn’t been revealed. But towards the end of her pregnancy, Markle no longer wore the ring.

Markle has been breaking the rules ever since she wed Prince Harry. She was the first female royal to give not give birth at St. Mary’s Hospital’s Lindo Wing since Princess Diana.

The former Hollywood star didn’t also introduce her son to the world immediately after she gave birth to him on May 6.
