  • The 49-year-old husband died after he was approached by three men and had his throat slit
  • The wife admitted to the killing, and a murder case was registered against her and the three men

A woman in India's Rajasthan state was arrested over the weekend for murdering her husband with the help of her relatives after she suspected him of having an extramarital affair.

The husband, identified as 49-year-old Devi Singh, was killed in his home in the village of Balapur in Bhilwara on Aug. 22. Three men approached him and slit his throat, The Times of India reported, citing police.

One of the masked men fired at Singh, who used to run a fodder business, before fleeing, according to police.

Singh's wife, Pinki Kanwar, was arrested Saturday after she told police during questioning that she had suspected Singh of having an affair with another woman in the village.

Kanwar was brought in for interrogation after police found during their investigation into the incident that she and her husband had a strained relationship. Police had been checking if any business or family rivalry had led to the killing.

Kanwar also told investigators that Singh had not been giving her any money, which, along with her extramarital affair suspicions, prompted her to plot the murder with her relatives. She said she approached Chittorgarh resident Kuldeep Singh, who is married to the daughter of Kanwar's sister.

He promised to kill Singh and came to Kanwar's husband's house with two other men on Aug. 22 to murder him.

Kuldeep and the two other men, who have also been identified, have absconded. Police have registered a case of murder against Kanwar and the three men. Further investigation is underway.

A similar incident occurred in the Indian state of Haryana last week when a former military officer hacked his daughter-in-law to death after he suspected her of having an affair.

The man, identified as Rao Rai Singh, killed his daughter-in-law, Sunita, and his tenant, Krishan Kumar, on Tuesday over their alleged affair. He also killed Kumar's wife and 9-year-old-child, while he left the couple's 3-year-old child hospitalized.

Rao, a former Army officer, was arrested later that day.

Detectives said Rao murdered Sunita first before going to Kumar's home, which had broken latches that indicated it had been forcefully entered.

"This is a cold-blooded, gruesome murder. There are signs of injuries on bodies that appear to have been caused after death... The suspect has told the police that he kept stabbing his victims," an officer was quoted as saying.
