“NCIS” Season 16 ends tonight, but the show itself isn’t ending just yet.

The CBS series began in 2003 and is still going very strong, which is why the network hasn’t canceled it and instead renewed it for Season 17 early last month.

“‘NCIS’ has been a global juggernaut for almost two decades,” Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment, said in a press release. “Its viewers are clearly the most loyal of any drama on television.”

She continued: “They are passionate about the characters, the plot lines, and the storytelling. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the gifted production team, and the cast, led by the extraordinary Mark Harmon. We are delighted that the show will remain a lynchpin of the CBS schedule this coming season.”

When the show comes back with Season 17, episode 1, it’ll continue to air during its usual Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT time slot. A premiere date has not yet been set, but it’ll be at some point during CBS’ fall 2019 schedule.

What is known is that Season 16, episode 24, titled “Daughters,” airs tonight, and it’ll be another action-packed finale.

“Former FBI Agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano) pleads with Gibbs [Harmon] to do whatever is necessary to take down drug dealers and suppliers in the area after his daughter, Emily Fornell (Juliette Angelo), is hospitalized from an opiate overdose,” the synopsis reveals. “Gibbs is haunted by the personal aspects of the case and his history with vigilante justice.”

Sean Murray (NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee), Emily Wickersham (NCIS Special Agent Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop), Wilmer Valderrama (NCIS Special Agent Nicholas “Nick” Torres), Maria Bello (NCIS Special Agent Jaqueline “Jack” Sloane), Brian Dietzen (Dr. Jimmy Palmer), Diona Reasonover (Forensic Scientist Kasie Hines), Rocky Carroll (NCIS Director Leon Vance) and David McCallum (Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard) also star.

The episode’s guest cast includes Spano and Angelo.

The “NCIS” Season 16 finale, which was written by Steven D. Binder and directed by Tony Wharmby, airs on CBS on Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT.
