Netflix has some news that will make “Russian Doll” fans scream “Sweet birthday, baby!” with delight.

The streaming service confirmed on Tuesday that time-looping Natasha Lyonne series “Russian Doll” has been renewed for a second season. The series premiered on Netflix on Feb. 1 to a rave response from viewers and critics alike, with some calling it the platform’s best original series of 2019. Plans for the second round of time-looping existential drama were not firm at that time, but it was clear that the appetite was there.

In interviews after the launch of the show, co-creators Lyonne and Leslye Headland mused about original plans for multiple seasons and how they might factor into the future. Specifically, Headland said that the initial plan was for a three-season show, with Lyonne’s Nadia always being a part of the proceedings while not necessarily always being the main character.

Whatever ends up happening in Season 2 can only be guessed at, as very little else was confirmed by Netflix in their initial announcement. So, whether or not Lyonne will be joined once again by Season 1 co-stars Greta Lee or Charlie Barnett, or if she and Headland will be joined again by fellow co-creator Amy Poehler, remains up in the air.

“Russian Doll” Season 1 follows Lyonne as Nadia, a woman who finds herself stuck dying and restarting the night of her birthday over and over again. Over the course of the season, she meets up with fellow time-looper Alan (Barnett) and tries to discover the secret behind her temporal imprisonment. Other cast members include Yul Vazquez, Elizabeth Ashley, Jeremy Bobb, and Burt Young (“Rocky”).

The first season of “Russian Doll” is currently streaming on Netflix.
