A woman was killed and five other people were injured in a shooting incident aboard a Greyhound bus in South California on Monday.

The bus carried about 40 people and was travelling from Los Angeles to the Bay Area along Interstate 5.

According to an ABC News report, the shooting occurred around 1:27 A.M., when the bus was near Lebec, 80 miles north of Los Angeles.

The bus driver pulled over the shoulder after the gunman opened fire and “was able to persuade the shooter” to get off the bus, Sgt. Brian Pennings of the California Highway Patrol said, NBC News reported.

The suspect readily went out of the bus and left a black handgun behind. Officers took him into custody without any further incident.

The suspect and his motives are still unidentified, according to California Highway Patrol communications supervisor Steve Loftus. Meanwhile, the five wounded passengers were transported to hospitals.
