  • The mother is now in critical condition
  • Relatives found the trio in bed with blood pooled around them
  • The children, aged 4 and 2, had deep cuts on their neck

A woman slit the throats of her two young sons before attempting to kill herself. She took the extreme step following domestic disputes with her husband.

The shocking incident happened in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Monday. The 22-year-old accused, Adilakshmi K, is in a critical condition, The Times Of India reported.

The murders came to light Monday when Adilakshmi's parents noticed the mother and children lying on the bed with blood all over the room. While the boys – Mukesh, 4, and Deekshit, 2 – had deep gashes on their necks, the woman only had a shallow wound on her throat. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

Police said Adilakshmi killed the boys before slitting her own throat. They said she had some issues with her husband.

Adilakshmi got married to a man, named Kareti Srihari, around five years ago. The couple used to quarrel frequently. Adilakshmi didn't like to stay with her in-laws. Though she discussed with her husband her plan to move out of the house, he wasn't supportive of her idea.

Around 10 days ago, Adilakshmi decided to leave her marital home and return to her parents' home. Her parents told the police that their daughter was depressed. Though she tried to get in touch with her husband many times, he didn't answer her calls. One of their sons also fell sick during this period, adding to her frustration.

"Family members said this was the tipping point for Adilakshmi to take the extreme step," a police officer told The Times Of India.

Adilakshmi has been charged with murder and an attempt to kill herself.

A similar incident was reported last month in India after a mother killed her 3-year-old daughter before ending her own life. The woman's husband was also found dead in a nearby forest. Police said the couple had a fight a day before the incident. The bodies were found by their landlord the next day.
