A pregnant woman was caught on surveillance camera throwing a bowl of scalding soup at an 11-month-old baby in a restaurant in China on Tuesday.

According to local media, the 28-year-old woman, identified only as Ren, was reportedly was enraged after a “noisy” baby girl began banging the spoon loudly on the table. The woman, who was in a bad mood following an argument with her husband prior to the incident, began fighting with the baby’s mother over the child making noise.

Ren’s husband then asked her to leave the restaurant. However, a few minutes after getting out of the restaurant, Ren returned and threw a bowl of hot soup on the mother-daughter duo, before fleeing from the scene. Police were called to the restaurant and the baby was rushed to a nearby hospital after she received burns to her back.

Speaking to local media, the child’s mother said her daughter refused to eat or drink after the incident. Doctors believe the child has suffered a shock.

Meanwhile, the Xiangcheng police issued a 500-yuan ($73) fine to Ren, who could not be taken into custody as she was pregnant. Police said Ren paid the victim's medical bills. Depending on the seriousness of the injuries, police will carry out further investigation.

In a similar case in Newton, Massachusetts, in October 2018, a woman was caught on camera throwing soup at a restaurant owner’s face following an argument. The owner gave the customer a sample soup along with her ordered sandwich. The unnamed customer, who was angry that a spoon was not given with the soup, threw the liquid at the owner’s face. The woman was taken into custody and charged with assault.
