KEY POINTS

  • Work on "Wonder Woman 3" has been fast-tracked
  • "Wonder Woman 1984" broke records and tripled HBO Max's viewership
  • "Wonder Woman 3" will conclude the Gal Gadot-led franchise

Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins will once again team up to conclude the "Wonder Woman" trilogy, and the final movie might arrive sooner than expected.

Gadot and Jenkins' partnership in the superhero flick "Wonder Woman" has been a massive hit. On Christmas Day, "Wonder Woman 1984" was released and the third installment is already in the works with Warner Bros. announcing that work on the third movie has been fast-tracked.

"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy," Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich said in a statement to People.

"Wonder Woman 1984" was supposed to hit theaters a few months back, but the release date was pushed back due to the pandemic. Since most theaters have not reopened yet, Jenkins agreed to release the anticipated superhero movie on HBO Max and it was a huge hit.

The Gadot starrer "broke records and exceeded our expectations," Warner Bros. said. HBO Max's viewership was over three times its typical number when "Wonder Woman 1984" was released.

"During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option," said Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager, WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer.

Meanwhile, it made $16.7 million at the box office so far and was the biggest opening day weekend since the pandemic began. Globally, "Wonder Woman 1984" has already grossed $85 million.

"Wonder Woman 1984" received mixed responses on Twitter, with some saying it wasn't as good as the first one. However, more were entertained and said it was a true masterpiece. Many also praised Kristen Wiig’s performance as Cheetah, Wonder Woman’s nemesis in the movie.

The viewers were also treated with a surprising post-credits scene featuring the first "Wonder Woman" actress, Lynda Carter. Jenkins admitted that she struggled to bring Carter into the film, but she has always wanted her to appear in the trilogy.

"I can't throw her away on something small but I can't make her something big," Jenkins explained. "What I loved about this way of doing it is that I feel like we're really truly honoring who she is. Who is it that inspired the legacy of the greatest hero of all time: Lynda! So it was like a perfect thing to put it both in the story but actually have it stand for exactly what she means to us."
