Aquaman tops McAfee's list of the most toxic superheroes to search for on the internet. McAfee / Intel Security

To many comic book fans, Aquaman is one of the lamest superheroes. Thanks to the "Superfriends" cartoon and "Entourage," he's become the butt of many jokes (even though he's an awesome character). But now it's the King of Atlantis' turn to laugh: He just claimed the top spot on McAfee's Most Toxic Superhero list.

Released annually since 2013 by Intel Security, the McAfee Most Toxic Superhero list ranks the top 10 comic book character who, when searched, lead unwary users to sites infected with viruses, malware and other "inappropriate content" that can compromise computers. This year, Intel Security found that you had a 20 percent chance of landing on a dangerous site when searching for Aquaman. Superman topped last year's list, and Aquaman was number one in 2013.

Intel Security collected the data by searching Google, Yahoo and Bing for superheroes and other search terms that might lead to malware. Then, the SiteAdvisor technology assesses the risk percentage of the sites and lets users know how safe it is to visit.

The rest of the top five includes Iron Fist (Marvel), Wolverine (Marvel), Wonder Woman (DC Comics) and Doctor Strange (Marvel). It's not surprising that these heroes made the list because all of them will be featured in upcoming movies and TV shows that have received a lot of buzz this year. An Iron Fist series is coming to Netflix; Aquaman (played by Jason Momoa) and Wonder Woman (played Gal Godot) will be featured in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" and both are receiving their own standalone films in the future; Hugh Jackman's last Wolverine film is due out in 2017; and "Doctor Strange," starring Benedict Cumberbatch, hits theatres in November 2016.

"[Cybercriminals] are aware that people are surfing for these characters, giving cybercriminals ample opportunity to steal innocent people’s personal information," a press release said.

Naturally, this over abundance of superhero content is pushing many curious fans to the Internet to search for information on some of these relatively unknown characters. Hence, sites that feature these heroes provide cybercriminals with unsuspecting victims, especially young children who aren't security conscious.
