A woman in Combes, Texas, was charged Wednesday after her one-year-old child was found unresponsive in the bathtub.

Police responded to a home after receiving a report that a child was found unresponsive. The officers found the child unresponsive in the bathtub. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital and was expected to make a full recovery.

Investigation revealed that the mother of the toddler, identified as 20-year-old Amayrani Martinez, had left the boy and his two-year-old sibling under the care of a 11-year-old girl, believed to be a family member. The girl fell asleep while the children were bathing in the bathtub. When the water began to rise in the bathtub, the two-year-old sibling managed to climb out. Unfortunately, the one-year-old child wasn’t able to get himself out.

When the girl woke up a while later, she found the toddler unresponsive in the bathtub, which was overflowing. The girl immediately alerted a neighbour who in turn informed the police.

During interrogation, the mother of the child told the investigators that she had left her children in the girl’s care and gone out to buy grocery. She was taken into custody and charged with injury to a child and child endangerment. She was held in Cameron County jail. The children were turned over to an adult family member.
