An 18-year-old girl in India has poisoned her parents and brother so she could elope and tie the knot with her boyfriend.

The families of the girl, identified as Khusbu, and her boyfriend, identified as Sachin, lived in the same building in the western state of Gujarat and became friends, police said. They eventually fell in love with each other and two years ago, they eloped.

However, the girl's parents managed to track her down and take her back. The family also moved to another place. She was a minor at that time and her parents were against her relationship with Sachin, reported Latestly.

The girl decided to elope with her boyfriend again once she turned 18.

"Two days after the girl's 18th birthday, she planned to elope with her lover and the duo plotted to make her parents unconscious and escape from home on September 12," a police officer told local daily Times of India Sunday.

The girl allegedly bought some tablets from a medical store and mixed them with food. She then made her parents and brother consume it. However, she refused to eat, claiming she was not feeling well.

Minutes later, the family members felt dizzy and fell unconscious. Afterward, the girl was allegedly picked up by her boyfriend's father, Ashok, and she eloped with the boy.

The girl's father, Vanzara, regained consciousness a few hours later and noticed that the girl was missing. He received a call from the police station and was told his daughter had come to the station to have their marriage registered.

"She came to inform the police about her marriage and be allowed to go with her husband as she is a major now," a police officer said. The legal age of marriage in India is 18 years for women and 21 for men.

The condition of the girl's family members soon deteriorated and they were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Following their recovery, they filed a police complaint against the newlyweds.

The girl, her now-husband and his father were booked Friday. While the boy's father was located and taken into custody Saturday, the other two accused have remained on the run.

As of Sunday, police were on the lookout for the accused couple. They are believed to be hiding in a relative's residence.
