An 18-year-old Indianapolis man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder for brutally stabbing a teen due to an argument on Instagram.

The victim suffered stab wounds to his heart and brain, according to court documents.

On Sept. 8, the suspect Wyatt Maxey and a 17-year-old student from North Central High School in Washington Township began fighting outside the school building and later took the brawl inside. At one point, Maxey stabbed the teen multiple times.

Maxey is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery and possession of a knife on school property resulting in bodily injury, reported WTTV.

Maxey told the police that he and the victim “traded insults” on Instagram and threatened each other. They initially planned to fight on Sept. 7 outside an apartment building but called it off because “people and kids were present” there.

The next morning, the students again encountered each other and decided to fight behind the J. Everett Light Career Center. Maxey told investigators that he slammed the victim to the ground and “claimed” him.

As the victim walked away with a friend, Maxey went after them and stabbed the teen, reported WANE. Prior to the stabbing, a student reportedly heard the 18-year-old say “Come on, let’s fight” and “Y’all got five seconds before I slice you.”

School officials at the scene tried to intervene but were unable to break up the fight until police officers came and separated them. Multiple witnesses identified Maxey as the attacker.

The victim was taken to a hospital and is currently in an intubated state and is likely to remain that way for months. He has gone into cardiac arrest twice since the attack.

“What else am I going to do? I don’t want to say it like that. I guess you can say I was trying to kill him, I don’t know…it just happened,” Maxey told a detective, who asked him if he intended to kill the victim.

Maxey apologized for his actions and said he wanted to “take responsibility” for what he did. He told investigators that he was “angry” and was “not thinking” during the stabbing incident.

The 18-year-old had no visible injury on him.
