A two-year-old girl died after being thrown out of the window of a six-floor apartment by her grandmother. The incident took place in Mumbai, the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra, on Saturday.

The incident came to light after neighbors found the victim, identified as Jiya Ansari, lying motionless in a pool of blood on the ground. They immediately alerted the victim’s family who rushed the girl to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. Though initially it was suspected that she might have accidentally fallen off the window, investigators felt otherwise when they noticed that the front door as well as the window were both shut.

“The manner in which Jiya’s body was found also suggested that she had been thrown out,” an officer said, adding that this raised a suspicion that a family member had thrown the girl out of the window. A probe was conducted and all the family members were questioned.

"The initial questioning of the family members did not yield any results so some of them were questioned again and this time the victim's grandmother, who was her father's step-mother, changed her statement. The grandmother -- who was later made the accused -- kept changing her statement and wanted to avoid questions, which raised suspicion,” another officer said.

The grandmother, Ruksana Ansari, was questioned by the police following which she confessed to the crime. She told the officers that she threw the child out of the window following an argument with the victim’s mother. Ruksana added that after throwing the child out, she shut the window and went back to sleep.

"Ruksana would regularly get into fights with her daughter-in-law and to teach her a lesson, she threw out her granddaughter while the victim's mother and other family members were asleep Saturday morning and went back to sleep again," police said.

Ruksana was arrested and charged with murder.
