A toddler was mauled to death by a dog in Portsmouth, Virginia, on Monday.

Portsmouth Police responded to Darby Close area around 2 p.m. EDT on Monday after receiving information that a child was bitten by a dog. Medics too arrived at the scene and rushed the two-year-old girl to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The toddler succumbed to injuries later in the day.

Meanwhile, the dog, a pit bull, was handed over to the animal control officers. It was currently placed in quarantine. Police were investigation the incident and details regarding whose dog it was and how the child was attacked were not known.

The family started a GoFundMe page to help them cover the toddler’s funeral expenses.

“Our precious Demi's life was taken away due to a tragic accident. Demi fought for her life the best she could, but the injuries were too much for her little body to endure and God called her home to take away her suffering,” the organizer of the online fundraiser said.

Describing the toddler as “intelligent, sassy and full of life,” the post added that the girl lost her father last year.

“We are raising money to cover Demi's funeral expense and will be placing her in a location close to her father so they can continue to watch over the family together,” the post added.
