Five Los Angeles sheriff's cadets were seriously injured Wednesday and 17 others hurt after a wrong-way driver plowed into the group during a training run.

The incident was first reported at about 6:26 a.m. local time and occurred near the Whittier, Calif. training academy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The 22-year-old driver was detained after he was treated for minor injuries. No further details on the driver were released.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Sheila Kelliher said an SUV was traveling the wrong way when it plowed into the joggers before smashing into a light pole and knocking it down. Kelliher said the damage and fallen pole shows "there was some velocity there."
