Three people including the parents were charged Thursday (April 23) in connection with the fatal shooting of a four-year-old Pennsylvania girl.

According to local reports, police responded to a local hospital on April 20 after receiving information that a child was admitted with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The girl, however, didn’t respond to the treatment and succumbed to injuries. Investigation revealed that the child, identified as Kastari
"Star" Nunez, was shot inside a home and was rushed to the hospital by the family members.

Speaking about the incident, police had said, "We don’t know what led up to this four-year-old girl being shot. We believe it took place inside the house, but we’re not sure if it happened on the first floor or the second floor, in a bedroom. We’re not certain.”

Four adults, who were in the home when the incident took place, were detained for interrogation. Following preliminary investigation, officials said it was “extremely unlikely” that the child died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A search warrant was executed at the home during which a revolver loaded with five rounds was found in the living room sofa.

It was revealed that the child’s father, 29-year-old Alhakim Nunez, was conducting a drug deal inside the home when the incident took place. However, no information was available regarding who actually shot the girl.

Meanwhile, the girl’s father and mother, identified as Iris Rodriguez, were charged with involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child, and obstruction of justice. Another woman, identified as Ashley Gushue, who was in the room with the victim when the incident took place, was also charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. No information was available regarding the fourth person who was present in the residence at the time of the shooting.

"My office has charged both parents for their roles in the completely preventable death of their child, along with a third individual who was also present at the time of this incident. This is very much an active investigation, and I want to thank the dedicated officers and investigators who are still working to determine all of the facts surrounding this tragedy, in order to seek justice for a child lost far too soon in a most horrific way,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Thursday.
