It’s no secret that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have had trouble with their public image. After taking private jets, spending millions on renovations and avoiding most interaction with the press, the two have started to be perceived as snobby elites. Their current trip to South Africa is being used to change that. The Duchess of Sussex, in particular, is taking every step she can to fix her image.

Meghan has dozens of engagements while in South Africa, and it’s clear that she is using them to try to express a more humble presentation. Check out everything she has done so far in an effort to change the misconceptions:

Re-wearing Clothes — She has been wearing outfits that she has worn to prior events. It’s a very normal thing for a commoner, but it’s less common among royalty and celebrities. Mehgan has brought out her striped Martin Grant maxi dress, her Everlane jumpsuit and her blue Veronica Beard dress in the past week, all of which have been seen before.

Keeping It Casual — Meghan is also watching the price tags. She’s careful not to be too extravagant on this tour, and that even extends to her wedding rings. The Duchess of Sussex apparently left her diamond engagement ring at home to avoid any extra attention.

Bringing Out Archie — Meghan and Harry have been accused of hiding their son, but that’s not the case anymore. The two brought Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and press were there to grab photos. They even posted a cute video to Instagram.

Ditching Formalities — Palace aides previously confirmed that the Duke and Duchess were not enforcing any type of protocol when meeting people on this trip. They want everyone to feel comfortable and open, so no titles or bowing will be enforced.

Flying Commercial — Royal fans knew that Meghan and Harry wouldn’t fly private after all the August criticism. They’ve been seen entering and exiting commercial flights throughout the African tour.

It is believed that these might be suggestions may have come from a Hollywood publicity team. The Duke and Duchess hired Los Angeles PR firm Sunshine Sachs to help with the Sussex Foundation, but anonymous sources claim that they’re also working on the couple’s image.

“Meghan knew she needed help, [so] she reached out to a very few trusted people, including Keleigh [Thomas Morgan],” an insider told Page Six. “She has a few girlfriends in the UK who are extremely well-versed in British media.”
