A 7-month-old baby, who was kidnapped by his mother’s ex-boyfriend after he shot her, was found safe and was reunited with his family.

According to the Port Arthur Police, the investigation began Monday (June 8) when deputies responded to a shooting in the 4300 of Lewis Drive in Port Arthur, Texas.

Reports from the police stated 26-year-old Nathan Roberts Jr. forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s home and opened fire at her. The bullet struck her in the hand. The suspect then kidnapped the woman’s son and fled the scene in a golden colored Jeep Cherokee.

An Amber alert was issued for the baby boy, and a lookout was issued for Roberts and the vehicle. The vehicle was located a short while later but neither Roberts and the infant were not found inside the vehicle. It was clear the suspect had escaped the scene after abandoning the vehicle.

The police tracked down Robert’s cellphone and it was located at the 600 block of 7th Ave, not too far away from where the abandoned SUV was located.

An intense search was initiated in the area and a short while later the police located Roberts. He surrendered to the authorities Monday night.

The baby reunited with his mother shortly after 7 p.m. Monday. The woman, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the shooting, was treated at a nearby hospital. She was reported to be in stable condition.

According to Detective Mike Hebert with the Port Arthur Police, Roberts is the biological father of the baby.

Charges on Robert are still pending as the investigation is ongoing. It is still unclear as to what led Roberts to kidnap his own child.

The witness told police that Lipford dragged his ex-wife to a car before pointing a gun at her and opened fire at her. He then fled the scene with their infant child. Lipford was charged with aggravated assault. The Sheriff’s office later confirmed that the charges were upgraded to “kidnapping, child endangerment, and possession of a firearm while committing a felony.”
