A 72-year old woman has been seriously injured after a huge dog attacked her in the vicinity of Engine Fields, Yeadon.

West Yorkshire Police came to the scene at 9:39 a.m., after receiving reports of a woman being attacked by a dog. According to the statement released by the police, they found the woman seriously injured on arriving at the location. She was taken to the Leeds general infirmary where she is currently recovering from the serious injuries. The woman was reported to be in a stable condition.

A 22-year old local man has been arrested and kept in custody on charges of serious dog offences. Information about the suspect’s identity and how he is related to the whole incident has not yet been revealed. The dog that attacked the lady too has been seized.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident this morning or who has any other information that could assist the investigation. We understand there may have been previous incidents in the same area where people have been chased by the same dog and we are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has been involved in those,” Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds District CID, told reporters.

Several men rushed to save the woman from the dog after they heard her screaming. They found the woman in a boggy area being yanked about by the dog. One of them pulled her out of the water and took her away while the rest tried to hold off the dog. A man who came to the rescue of the lady too was bitten by the dog.

According to one of the rescuer, the dog, which was huge and strong, didn’t look particularly aggressive. It took three "blokes" to stop the dog.

“I know that’s a bit of a paradox with what I’ve just said but it wasn’t being overly aggressive, it wasn’t growling, it wasn’t trying to rip our legs apart although it did bite the other guy as well, on his leg. But it looked to me like the dog was just thinking it was just a game, which made it slightly more harrowing,” Nick, the person who rescued the old lady, told Leeds Live.

After the rescuers got the dog off the woman, they cornered it till she was taken away. Nick added that he was thankful the dog hadn’t attacked one of the kids playing nearby, saying that the “damage it would have done to a child would have been catastrophic.”

Ross Thackeray, another man who had rushed to the woman's help said that she had deep lacerations that went right upto the bone on her right arm and her face was also bleeding. Nick and Thackeray both agreed that the dog was some sort of a bulldog or a pitbull type terrier, but were not sure.

Police have cordoned off the park as enquiries.
