An investigation is underway in Florida after a missing elderly woman was found dead inside of a large freezer chest in her home.

Marie Hoskins, 93, was found dead Friday at her home in Sebastian, a city located about 90 miles southeast of Orlando. Hoskins' neighbors had called for a welfare check. Officers were able to obtain a key to the home with a warrant and the assistance of an out-of-town family member, the Sebastian Police Department said in a statement.

"They decided to continue in the residence to see if she was inside, at which point, when they went into the garage, they located a chest freezer and there was a deceased person inside," said Sebastian Police Capt. Timothy Wood, according to NBC Miami.

Before entering the home, the local officers made multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact someone at the residence.

Police discovered Hoskins' 64-year-old daughter living in the home when they entered. She claimed that she “hadn’t seen her mother Marie in some time,” according to a police statement.

The daughter's name was not released.

The cause of Hoskins' death is currently unclear. No person has been charged with a crime.

Police said that additional evidence was found along with Hoskins' body. A local medical examiner is also working on determining the cause of death.

“Detectives are actively working with the Medical Examiner and the State Attorney’s Office on this case as it is still active at this time,” a police statement read.
