Taiwanese-based PC computer company Acer has just begun distributing invitations to a press event in Barcelona, Spain during the Mobile World Congress being held there next month.

The invitation indicates Acer will have a smartphone launch and that Acer President and CEO Gianfranco Lanci will speak.

Acer confirmed in December that it would be launching a smartphone, but gave no launch date. The company acquired the firm E-Ten last September, and is using their expertise to develop the phone. At the time, Acer confirmed that its smartphone would be based on Windows Mobile.

Lanci and the head of the Smart Handheld business unit Aymar de Lencquesaing will be on hand for the event to specify more details about Acer Smartphones that would will be launched at a press conference Feb. 16.
