  • "Call of Duty 2021" is still on track to its scheduled release
  • Activision said the game will release in the last quarter of 2021
  • Rumors have it that this year's "CoD" installment is called "Call of Duty WWII: Vanguard"

The upcoming season of "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" and "Call of Duty: Warzone" will start next week as confirmed by Activision. Interestingly, it appears the video game publisher has also subtly announced that its next "Call of Duty" title will be coming this year.

The new cover image of "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" Season 5 has a lot of numbers, symbols and kanji letters in the background, which are not just random stuff. Twitter user EricMynardII spotted the kanji letters in the image, which reportedly means "Vanguard" coming.

The term Vanguard is rumored to be the official name of "Call of Duty 2021," which according to rumors would be released as "Call of Duty WWII: Vanguard."

President and COO of Activision Daniel Alegre confirmed in an earnings call Tuesday that the latest entry in the "Call of Duty" franchise is on track to release in the last quarter of 2021.

Unfortunately, very few details were shared but it was revealed that the game will be cross-gen and would return to a setting fans "know and love." The executive offered an update about the game stating, "Our teams remain hard at work on the next new premium Call of Duty release, planned for the fourth quarter."

He also expressed optimism about the upcoming title saying, "From a setting that our fans know and love to an incredible amount of content in development including an extensive live ops schedule, we believe this release will be incredibly well received."

Alegre also noted, “In addition to launching a great seamless experience for both current and next-gen console players, we are focused on continuing to integrate Warzone and engaging our direct relationship with our player base through even deeper content integration between the premium and free experiences and substantial innovation coming within Warzone itself."

Activision would reportedly reveal "Call of Duty 2021" sometime this summer. The game is believed to be revealed through an in-game event in "Call of Duty: Warzone."
