KEY POINTS

  • Amanda Bynes has filed for the termination of her nine-year conservatorship
  • The actress’ mom was given temporary conservatorship in 2013
  • Bynes’ lawyer said the Hollywood star’s condition has already improved

Amanda Bynes wants to end the full conservatorship that was granted to her mom, Lynn Organ, about nine years ago.

The 35-year-old actress quietly filed a petition Wednesday seeking the termination of her conservatorship, Variety confirmed Friday.

A day before, she also filed a capacity declaration, claiming that she’s now in a better mental state to take control of her financial and personal affairs. California requires conservatees to provide information on their mental health status from their doctors if they are trying to put an end to their conservatorship.

Bynes’ move to submit a termination request at the Venture County Superior Court in California comes nearly nine years after her mom was granted temporary conservatorship in 2013 because the actress had set a stranger’s driveway on fire. Organ was given full conservatorship over Bynes’ person and estate a year later.

“Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary,” the former child star’s attorney, David A. Esquibias, told People this week.

Meanwhile, Organ’s lawyer, Tamar Arminak, said the “She’s The Man” star’s mother fully supports the termination of the conservatorship, and she’s happy for her daughter.

“This conservatorship that Lynn brought has always been intended to be temporary, and Lynn is extremely happy and thrilled and proud of Amanda and ready to terminate this conservatorship based on the hard work Amanda has done,” Arminak said.

A hearing was set for March 22 in Oxnard, California.

While the former Nickelodeon star stayed off the radar in the showbiz industry, she’s managed to turn her life around while away from the public eye. In November 2018, she announced that she’s been sober for four years.

In June 2019, Bynes graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. Last year, Esquibias shared an update with Page Six about the actress’ condition, saying she was “doing really well, besides anxiety and trauma.”

Bynes’ case comes four months after Britney Spears was finally set free from her conservatorship that lasted for 13 years. The “Toxic” singer now has full control over her personal life and finances.
