The Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton sex scandal that led to the former president’s impeachment hearings, may now be adapted to the small screen as part of the hit FX television show, "American Crime Story."

The news about the show's fourth season came after Ryan Murphy, one of the executive producers and directors behind the show, expressed interest in adapting Jeffrey Toobin's 2000 book "A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President" as his choice for the show’s future, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Toobin's bestseller seems like an obvious contender as another of the author’s books, "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson," was adapted to create the Emmy-winning first season of the show. The author also served as a consultant to the writing staff, a role that he may also reprise in the future.

The Lewinsky-Clinton scandal surfaced during the latter’s presidency when Lewinsky, first a White House intern and latter a staffer, had sexual encounters with the president between November 1995 and March 1997. The scandal ultimately led to Clinton being impeached by the House of Representatives on two charges, but he was acquitted by the Senate.

The Hollywood Reporter cited sources who suggested Murphy and producers of Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions are already in the process of casting for Lewinsky and other characters in the show. The success of the show has also prompted other studios into action, as more and more crime drama stories being adapted into TV shows.

HBO is working on "The Jinx, "NBC is working on Dick Wolf's "Law & Order: True Crime," Netflix is working on "Making a Murderer" and CBS is developing a Patty Hearst project. Meanwhile, production of seasons two and three of the American Crime Story is underway. The second season of the show will focus on Hurricane Katrina and is expected to debut in 2018, while the third season will be based on the July 1997 assassination of designer Gianni Versace and will air six months after the second one.
