J will finally get the chance to prove to his uncles that he has what it takes to replace Smurf as the leader of the Cody family, but on “Animal Kingdom” Season 4, episode 8, his plan will fall apart.

“The Codys head out for a big job, even though Smurf (Ellen Barkin) is nowhere to be found,” the “Ambo” synopsis teases. In the TNT promo video, J (Finn Cole) tells Pope (Shawn Hatosy), Craig (Ben Robson) and Deran (Jake Weary) that they will be dealing with him now and they won’t make mistakes.

In the previous episode, Smurf told Pope she wouldn’t be continuing her chemo treatments. She promised him she wouldn’t leave him with a mess when she dies and purchased a bunch of high powered firearms.

Later on, Smurf was seen stealing a car from the airport and started driving toward an unknown location. Will Smurf disappear to tie up loose ends, or is there another reason why she left town?

“All eyes are on J as he assumes a leadership position in a risky heist,” the “Animal Kingdom” Season 4, episode 8 synopsis says. In the “Ambo” promo video, J appears furious as he asks Pope if he thinks he was responsible for the botched heist.

J has been looking forward to showing his uncles that he is a better leader than Smurf. However, from the looks of the promo, it appears the job he planned will go wrong.

Will J be blamed for putting his family in danger, or did Smurf intentionally disappear in order to set him up to fail?

“Animal Kingdom” Season 4, episode 8 airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. EDT on TNT.
