KEY POINTS

  • Apple's new 13-inch MacBook Pro is here
  • It has the new Magic Keyboard, which means the butterfly keyboard is a thing of the past
  • It has weaker specs than the 16-inch model, but is significantly cheaper

Now that Apple's new 13-inch MacBook Pro is here, fans looking for a portable yet powerful computing device have something to add to their wishlist. The new device offers more power and convenience compared to the older model. It also is a bit different from its bigger sibling –the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Here's a quick look at some major differences between the new 13-inch MacBook Pro and the older model, as well as the differences between the 13-inch and 16-inch models.

The lack of a Butterfly keyboard

Aside from many improvements, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro also features the new Magic Keyboard which uses the more reliable Scissor mechanism. This means those who purchase the new device won't have to worry about calling Apple Support and asking for keyboard repairs anytime soon.

Cult of Mac noted that while Apple will sell Butterfly keyboard-sporting MacBooks in the form of refurbished models, every single new MacBook Pro listed in the company's online store will feature the new Magic Keyboard. Those who have been plagued by the problems related to that technology can now say goodbye to it.

Improved audio

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro features stereo speakers with high dynamic range, offers support for Dolby Atmos playback, and boasts of wide stereo sound. It also has a three-microphone array that offers directional beamforming, which will be very useful for video calls and recording purposes.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro, on the other hand, offers an even better speaker and microphone setup. The larger device uses six high-fidelity speakers with built-in force-cancelling woofers. It also uses a studio-quality three-mic array with high signal-to-noise ratio and directional beamforming capabilities. These makes the bigger device the better choice in terms of audio recording and playback.

Innards

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro can be equipped with up to a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor. It can be maxed up to 32GB RAM and 4TB storage for the model with four Thunderbolt ports. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, on the other hand, can be configured to have an octa-core Intel Core i9 processor, up to 64GB of RAM and up to 8TB of storage.

There are huge differences between the 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. These however, are just as big as the differences in their cost: the 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,299 while the 16-incher starts at $2,399.
