KEY POINTS

  • Ashton Kutcher said he and Mila Kunis "lived" out their films "Friends With Benefits" and "No Strings Attached"
  • They starred in the films separately, which were released in 2011
  • Kutcher stars in a new rom-com with Reese Witherspoon, "Your Place or Mine"

Ashton Kutcher said he and his wife Mila Kunis lived out romantic-comedy movies that they starred in separately before they began dating.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kutcher and his "Your Place or Mine" co-star Reese Witherspoon were asked by ET's Denny Directo to give their love stories with their respective spouses a title if it were a rom-com.

The "Butterfly Effect" actor, 44, had two films in mind when it came to his marriage to Kunis. "Well, I think it exists. It's called 'No Strings Attached' or 'Friends With Benefits,'" the actor replied.

Kutcher starred alongside Natalie Portman in the 2011 movie "No Strings Attached." Kunis' rom-com with Justin Timberlake, "Friends With Benefits," was released in the same year.

"You can choose the title. It's the same movie, and we both made it, and then we both lived it," Kutcher added.

Kutcher and Kunis began dating in early 2012, 13 years after they met as teenagers on the set of "That '70s Show." She previously shared on Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast that when they first became more than friends, she and Kutcher started hooking up rather than dating, according to Us Weekly.

"We lived our movies out, where we were like, 'Let's just hook up. Let's have fun. We're both single. We both trust each other. Everything's great.' None of us wanted tension. OK, great. We hooked up for three months. And just like our movies, one of us caught feelings," Kunis said, noting that Kutcher asked her to move in with him after she told him about her feelings for him.

The couple tied the knot on July 4, 2015. They share two children — daughter Wyatt Isabelle, 8, and son Dimitri Portwood, 6.

"Your Place or Mine," Kutcher's new Netflix rom-com with Witherspoon about two longtime friends who realize they may actually want to be more than platonic, also reminded the actor of his real-life romance with his wife.

"This is a story about people who are friends for 10 years... then they finally find this spark," he told ET. "And I went, 'Huh. I know a thing or two about that. This seems somewhat familiar. I think this could be interesting.' So, I did it."

The "Killers" star didn't hide his excitement about starring in a rom-com with the "Legally Blonde" actress. It's the first time that they're working with each other.

"What was wild was for years and years and years I was like, 'Oh man, I'd love to do a romantic comedy with Reese,'" Kutcher told ET.

The "Morning Show" star was also excited because they had equal parts in the film from writer and director Aline Brosh McKenna.

"So, we both are responsible for making it funny and better and endearing and real and rounded," Witherspoon said during the interview.

Meanwhile, Kutcher spoke about his friendship with Kunis in an interview with Esquire that was published Tuesday.

The actor recounted Kunis telling him, "You were an a--hole," following his separation from his ex-wife Demi Moore in 2011. He worked on himself and fell in love with his now-wife.

"The thing about Mila that made our relationship accelerate was that I had always admired her," Kutcher told the magazine. "Her talents, her skills, her gifts. But I knew that she didn't need me. And she knew that I didn't need her."

He added that they "knew all of each other's dirt" because of their years-long friendship and complimented Kunis for being "cooler than me."

"Your Place or Mine" will premiere on Netflix on Feb. 10.
