An infant is recovering after spending four to five days alone in an Oregon hotel room with his deceased mother’s body. Springfield Police said the woman died of an apparent drug overdose.

The 28-year-old mother was found after Department of Human Services agents tried checking in on the mother and child. Cops were called Monday around 7 p.m. to the Quality Inn and Suites in Springfield to find the woman and her 6-month-old baby in the hotel room, according to KVAL News.

Police said the baby was found in a stroller and is estimated to have spent four to five days unattended in the room after the mother overdosed on heroin.

Sgt. Pete Kirkpatrick with SPD said the woman’s check out from the hotel was only scheduled on Wednesday. The woman and baby may not have been found until then if not for the DHS worker.

Investigators said the mother had placed the privacy sign on the door, and because of this, housekeeping staff did not enter the room until after cops found the body and the infant.

The baby was found with blue lips and was barely responsive when cops arrived at the scene. It is unclear if the hotel’s staff or guests could hear the baby from outside the room.

"The child wouldn't have made it. It was that touch and go. Having been unattended to for 4 to 5 days. But we're lucky that DHS, that things happened how they did,” said Kirkpatrick, according to ABC affiliate KEZI 9 News.

The baby, found just in time, was rushed to the Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend and treated for dehydration and malnutrition. He was also found to have a severe diaper rash. The child was later transferred to Doernbecher in Portland.

The authorities said the infant is expected to make a full recovery despite coming out of the incident with several ailments.

Cops also found a noncriminal amount of heroin and other drug paraphernalia inside the hotel room. Investigations into the incident continue.

It was reported that the hotel staff declined to provide a comment about the incident to KEZI 9 News.
