Music teachers Jennifer and Eric Medlock of the Dallas suburb of Arlington have a very big bundle of joy on their hands. Their newborn son, Ali James Medlock, broke a record for the heaviest baby ever born at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital.

Ali James Medlock, who was born on Dec. 12, weighed in at 14 pound and 13 ounces. He was listed at 21.5 inches.

Jennifer Medlock had expected the baby to weigh 10 pounds. He was born to a C-section.

Several local and national media outlets reported on the story Friday.

Jennifer Medlock told USA Today she was "shocked" when told about her son's weight.

"We did not expect 14 pounds," she said. "Nobody did."

Ali had to remain in the hospital for a week due to low blood sugar and platelet but he is currently in good health.

According to Michigan Medicine, the average birth weight for babies is roughly 7.5 pounds, with boys usually heavier than girls.

The Guinness Book of World Records claims that the heaviest newborn weighed 22.8 pounds.
