  • Victim's family filed a complaint against the groom and he was taken into custody

In a bizarre but tragic incident, a guest at a wedding was accidentally shot dead by the groom.

The tragic event took place Wednesday in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The groom, Manish Madheshia, fired off a volley of shots into the air as his wedding procession was going on, The Times of India reported.

In a cruel twist of fate the bullet that killed the guest, 35-year-old Babulal Yadav, had come from his own gun; he had lent it to the groom.

A video of the incident is doing rounds on multiple social media platforms where the groom is seen perched on a decorated chariot, while his friends and relatives gathered around him. Gun-toting Madheshia fires a few rounds and a short while later, a stray bullet hits his friend.

The latter was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment where he succumbed to injuries, police officer Amrendra Pratap Singh told NDTV, confirming both the groom and the victim were friends.

The victim who had sought leave from work to visit his native town had lent his weapon to Madheshia to use during the revelry. The deceased's family filed a complaint against the groom and he was taken into custody. The weapon used during the firing has also been seized.

According to Indian law, it's a criminal offense to fire a gun at mass gatherings including weddings and places of worship. Brandishing weapons and firing in the air during weddings and other celebrations have seen many deaths in India.

A similar incident from the state was reported back in 2018 where the groom was accidentally killed during the celebratory firing by his friend. The incident, which was also captured on video, showed groom Sunil Verma escaping a shot from his friend's licensed gun before being hit by another. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. Verma's father filed an FIR against the friend who was then booked for murder.
