KEY POINTS

  • BTS member Jin's solo track "The Astronaut" reached 40 million streams on Spotify in 16 days
  • "The Astronaut" tied with his bandmate Jungkook's "Stay Alive," which also reached this mark in 16 days
  • Jin made his solo debut late last month ahead of his military service

BTS member Jin's solo single "The Astronaut" reached a new milestone just a little over two weeks after its release.

In late October, the 29-year-old vocalist made his solo debut with the single "The Astronaut." It has since made its way to music charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 51 with 4.9 million U.S. streams and 44,000 downloads on its first tracking week.

But the "Astronaut" fever has yet to die down as only 16 days after its release, the track became the fastest Korean song to hit 40 million streams on Spotify.

Jin tied with fellow BTS member Jungkook, whose solo single "Stay Alive" also reached the same mark 16 days after its release on Feb. 11, Allkpop reported.

Jin's song reportedly gained over 1.7 million streams per day and crossed 5.8 million monthly listeners on the platform.

The single was released alongside its official music video on YouTube. The video made history as the first to remain at the No. 1 spot on the platform's worldwide trends under the music category for 17 days straight since Oct. 28.

A day after "The Astronaut" was released, Jin flew to Argentina to perform the song live for the first time with British band Coldplay during their Buenos Aires concert held at the River Plate Stadium.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin confirmed the rumor that he gifted the song to the BTS member and revealed that it was a tribute to BTS fans as a "goodbye" before Jin enlists in South Korea's military for mandatory service before the year ends.

"About six months ago, one of [BTS'] members called me up and he said, 'I have to leave the band in December for two years to join the army in [South] Korea because that's the rules there," Martin told the crowd before the performance, which was also aired in a live stream via Billboard.

Martin continued, "And he said, 'I need a song that says goodbye to everybody for a little while, and tells them that I love them...' So, I said, 'Okay, we'll do a song together,' and instead of being worried about it, I feel so excited about it, [and] so grateful for this relationship that we have with BTS. Then this song arrived, and I was like, 'This is one of our best songs — let's give it to this gentleman.' And he's flown all the way here."

Last year, all seven members of BTS, Jin, RM, Suga, V, J-Hope, Jungkook and Jimin, collaborated with Coldplay on the track, "My Universe," for the latter's ninth studio album, "Music of the Spheres." The track peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with 11.5 million streams in the U.S., 5.5 million radio airplay audience impressions and 127,000 download and physical singles combined, Pinkvilla reported.

"My Universe" became the sixth song of the world's biggest boyband to make it to No. 1 on the same chart following "Dynamite," "Life Goes On," "Permission to Dance," and "Butter" and "Savage Love [BTS Remix]" featuring Jason Derulo.
