A California woman fatally struck four pedestrians, including two children Tuesday night, authorities said.

The unidentified woman, 28, of Escondido, was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, while two of her victims were pronounced dead at the scene and the other two died later at a hospital. The woman was driving on Bear Valley Parkway near Oak Hill Drive when her vehicle struck a man, a woman and two boys, Escondido police Lieutenant Scott Walters said, according to NBC News.

"Huge tragedy here. This is awful," Walters added. He said that police speculated the boys were aged 10 and 12; their relationship wasn’t immediately known.

The driver didn’t appear to be under the influence of drug or alcohol. No arrests have been made late Tuesday and the incident is under investigation.

Police said they were trying to determine if the pedestrians were walking down a crosswalk,or in the road, to figure out how exactly the crash happened.

Last April, a male driver in California was arrested for intentionally plowing into pedestrians, including a 13-year-old boy on a sidewalk, with his vehicle. At least eight victims were rushed to hospital following the incident. Paramedics found three of them in critical condition on arrival. The pedestrians were on the right side of the road but the driver drove into them before smashing into a tree. The driver, the sole person in the car, escaped unscathed.

In January, a Pennsylvania woman was arrested for purposely ramming her car into an oncoming vehicle in a bid to “test her faith in god.” She escaped unhurt but injured two passengers aboard the other vehicle. She told police that she waited for god’s instruction, circling the area for several hours prior to the incident. She was charged with aggravated assault and two other offenses.
