  • Mckay's sci-fi film project will pose as both a chilling and comic plot of an asteroid hitting earth
  • Oscar winners Lawrence and Blanchett will be leading the sci-fi movie as two low-level astronomers

Jennifer Lawrence and Cate Blanchett are teaming up for Adam Mckay's sci-fi Netflix original "Don't Look Up."

Don’t Look Up” will feature the Oscar-winning actresses as a pair of astronomers who discover a terrifyingly large meteoroid that is heading straight towards earth. Lawrence, 29, will be joined by Blanchett, 50, in the new sci-fi comedy currently being developed and produced by one of Hollywood’s high-profile directors, Adam Mckay.

With the movie revolving around the two astronomers, the pair of space experts are hoping to educate people about the world’s impending doom. They are tasked to embark on a media tour to warn mankind of the approaching celestial object that is about to destroy planet earth. While the film’s apocalyptic plot idea is definitely befitting amid the current coronavirus pandemic, the sci-fi film also has a comedic feel to it.

“Don’t Look Up,” spearheaded by Mckay, will be released as a Netflix original and is the director-producer’s first movie for the online streaming platform. It was Mckay who also wrote the sci-fi movie’s screenplay, along with Kevin Messick, and it is produced under the banner of the director's Hyperobject Industries.

News of the Netflix sci-fi comedy flick first broke in November last year via Deadline.

Now with talks of the two-time Oscar-winning actress joining Mckay’s sci-fi satire, Blanchett teaming up with Lawrence is an onscreen match that will fans can look forward to. Blanchett is recognized for her work in Martin Scorsese‘s “The Aviator” and Woody Allen‘s “Blue Jasmine.” She most recently appeared in Richard Linklater‘s comedy film “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” and currently stars as Phyllis Schlafly on the FX series “Mrs. America.”

In addition to the 50-year-old star’s long line of film projects, Blanchett is reportedly in the middle of filming Guillermo del Toro‘s “Nightmare Alley” with Bradley Cooper. The actress is also slated to play Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin‘s Amazon movie “Lucy and Desi.”

Meanwhile, “Don’t Look Up’s” production plans have obviously been altered due to the industry-wide shutdown brought about by the recurring COVID-19 pandemic. While it is still in the early stages of development, the film’s turnout is apparently unclear. In the meantime, Mckay and his production team are currently navigating ways to resolve the strains on the film's buildup.
