Mischa Barton's lawyer on Tuesday threatened to take legal action against those trying to sell an alleged sex video with nude photos of the actress to media outlets. Several celebrity news websites revealed about the existence of a tape featuring "The OC" star getting involved in sexual acts with an unidentified man.

"Revenge pornography is a form of sexual assault, and it is also a crime and a civil wrong in California. And we will not stand for it," attorney Lisa Bloom said, in a statement. "I have a message for anyone who attempts to traffic in these photos or videos of Ms. Barton: we will find you, and we will come after you. ... You proceed at your peril."

The threat was made a day after the Daily Mail reported that an X-rated video of the 31-year-old actress was being offered to the highest bidder, starting at $500,000. The U.K.-based tabloid also conducted an exclusive interview with Kevin Blatt, a self-described "sex tape broker" — who gained fame after promoting a video of Paris Hilton having sex in 2003 — who claimed that a third-party approached him with footage of Barton having sex.

"I believe the person or persons' selling it may be in possession of stolen property. Obviously without the permission of both parties in the tape, the potential sale would be futile," Blatt said in an email to NBC News.

Celebrities have increasingly challenged invasion of privacy and sex tape leaks after a hacker broke into the iCloud accounts of several actresses, including Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Kardashian and Vanessa Hudgens, and published the nude selfies found in their cell phones. The incident, which occurred in 2014, was called "the fappening" — a subreddit by the same name that was created for pictures and news related to the leaked images that were first posted on 4chan.

"It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime. It is a sexual violation. It's disgusting," Lawrence said in 2014.
