  • Farrell hoped that the audience would be entertained and moved by "The Batman" through its unique storyline

Colin Farrell shared more details on how he got into character for "The Batman."

Farrell plays Penguin in Robert Pattinson's "The Batman." In the teasers, he looked unrecognizable as the bloated Penguin, and he said it was because he spent four grueling hours in the makeup chair.

"Eventually they got it down to two," Farrell told Variety's Virtual Sundance Studio when he appeared to discuss his meditative sci-fi drama "After Yang," following its premiere at the virtual Sundance Film Festival.

The 45-year-old Irish actor admitted he wanted to be part of the superhero movie because of its writer and director, Matt Reeves, who oversaw the rebooted "Planet of the Apes" franchise.

"Matt Reeves is a wonderful filmmaker, so I was just grateful to be allowed anywhere near it," he said of the talented director. "Hopefully, people are entertained by it and moved by it. It’s a very unique take on a story that’s often been told."

The first trailer for "The Batman" dropped in August 2020. The viewers did not immediately notice Farrell because he looked very different. Jeffrey Wright admitted that he didn't recognize Farrell on the set when he transformed into his character, Penguin.

"Colin walked on to set one day and I walked right [past] him," Wright said with a laugh on SiriusXM's "The Jess Cagle Show." "I was like, ‘Okay, hey dude what’s happening? Where’s Colin? Are we going to shoot?’ It was, it’s pretty remarkable."

Several viewers shared the same opinion on Twitter after watching the trailer. They already knew Farrell's character in the movie but didn't anticipate his look, and they approved of it.

"Wait, is Twitter messing with me or is this really Colin Farrell as Penguin in the Batman trailer? If so this is one of the best transformation makeups I've ever seen?" John Squires commented.

"I can’t believe this is Colin Farrell as Penguin. He’s unrecognizable lol," @jdamis wrote.

Meanwhile, the upcoming "Batman" film will be the longest movie from the franchise ever. It will run for nearly three hours at two hours and 55 minutes, including eight minutes of credits. The record holder for the longest superhero flick is "Justice League" by Zack Snyder with airtime of four hours and two minutes.

"The Batman" also stars Pattinson as Batman, Zoe Kravtiz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson.

"The Batman" hits theaters on March 4.
