A tornado in Cuba late Sunday caused severe damages in several parts including the capital city of Havana. Strong winds and rain in the region knocked down power for several residents.

According to information published by local media outlet Cubanet, the affected neighborhoods include Santo Suárez, Luyanó, Vía Blanca, Regla and Chibás. The exact amount of damages and the number of people injured, if any, remain unclear.

"In the morning of today an extratropical low has been formed in the Southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, from which a cold front extends towards south-southeast. A line of electrical storms can form in the next hours, which with the movement to the east of these systems will affect the western part of the country tonight and early in the morning," Havana's Institute of Meteorology reported.

"The ambulance and police sirens have not stopped. We are in the dark," one resident told local media. "Everything looks desolate, like in a science fiction movie."

The Hijas de Galicia Hospital in Havana was evacuated due to damage, according to reports. Cuba's Civil Defence has reportedly urged people to remain in their homes.
