Canadian legal drama “Burden of Truth,” led by Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville) and Peter Mooney (“Rookie Blue”), is back on The CW for Season 2 as one of its 2019 summer TV series.

After the first season originally aired on Canada’s CBC in early 2018, it was broadcast in the United States on The CW during the summer of 2018. Now, Season 2 is following suit. All eight episodes were shown on CBC earlier this year, and now they’re about to kick off on The CW.

The Season 2 premiere of “Burden of Truth” airs tonight, and we’ve got the scoop on what’s to come, as well as a little recap of how the Season 1 finale ended.

In order to close the case and get a settlement for the teenage girls affected by Millwood Steel’s dumpsites, Joanna (Kreuk) made things personal with opposing counsel, her father, David (Alex Carter). She threatened him with Gerrilyn’s (Jessica Matten) birth certificate, which proved he was having an affair with her when she was underage. This made him back off and make the payout happen.

With her and Billy’s (Mooney) case wrapped, Joanna decided to leave to take a new job closer to her mom in Winnipeg, even though Billy asked her to stay. It’s revealed at the end that she changed her last name to her mother’s, which means she now goes by Joanna Chang, instead of Joanna Hanley.

So, what does Season 2 of The CW’s summer show have in store for fans?

“This season [Joanna] finds herself at a top law firm in Winnipeg ready to make a fresh start away from her previous firm,” the CBC’s press release synopsis begins. “There, a new client draws her into the shadowy world of hackers, activists and a political movement that won’t take any prisoners. The case leads Joanna through many twists and turns, until she eventually becomes a killer’s target. Her estranged father tries to assist her, which leads to an event that will change both their lives forever.”

The synopsis continued: “Meanwhile, Millwood’s lifeblood has been left depleted following the bankruptcy of the mill. With rising unemployment rates, tensions in town are running high, leaving Billy to retreat further away from town, but when his reckless brother Shane shows up, Billy is forced to confront childhood memories.”

While that’s what you can expect from Season 2 overall, let’s get a bit more specific about what episode 1 of the new “Burden of Truth” season has in store.

“Joanna (Kristin Kreuk) is working at a new law firm a year after her successful lawsuit against the steel mill in Millwood. Looking to start over, Joanna took up her mother’s surname and settled in a new city hoping for a quieter life,” according to the synopsis. “However, when her boss assigns her to a case for a brilliant, young, internet hacktivist, Joanna is dragged into a dark world of secrets that will turn her life upside down. Meanwhile, with the steel mill closed, the residents of Millwood are struggling to make ends meet and Billy is doing all he can to stop the town’s downward spiral. Luna (Star Slade) and Molly (Sarah Thompson) adjust to living together.”

The Season 2 premiere of “Burden of Truth,” titled ”Salesmen, Cheats and Liars,” which was directed by Grant Harvey and written by Brad Simpson, airs on The CW on Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT.
