“Burden of Truth” aired its Season 1 finale on The CW Wednesday night, but fans don’t have to worry about whether they’ll be getting a Season 2 or not because the renewal’s already official.

The network’s summer lawyer series, which stars Kristin Kreuk (Joanna Hanley) and Peter Mooney (Billy Crawford), originally aired on CBC in Canada earlier this year, and they’ve already ordered and filmed an 8-episode second season. It’s expected to debut on CBC during the winter 2019 season and will feature the original cast, as well as some new stars.

Aside from Mooney and Kreuk, the “Burden of Truth” actors returning are Alex Carter (David Hanley), Star Slade (Luna Spence), Sara Thompson (Molly Ross), Meegwun Fairbrother (Officer Owen Beckbie), Jessica Matten (Gerrilynn) and Anwen O’Driscoll (Taylor Matheson).

In the new season, Michelle Nolden will play Teddie Lavery, a lawyer who mentors Joanna, while Varun Saranga is Noah, Joanna’s new client. The other new cast members are Andrew Chown (Billy’s brother, Shane Crawford) and Raymond Ablack (young Steadman Lavery lawyer, Sunil Doshi).

Although CBC has confirmed it will continue to air the series, The CW has not revealed whether or not it will broadcast Season 2 of “Burden of Truth.” The network told International Business Times on Monday that there was no news about it to share at the moment.

When IBT spoke with Mooney over the summer, he teased a little bit about what fans can expect to see next on the show.

“Season 1 for me resolved in a really satisfying way, but there’s still something left,” he said. “There’s still a nagging something left at the end, and in Season 2, we take that little nagging something and blow it wide open. It turns out to be a much, much bigger thing than we might’ve thought. And the nice thing, too, is, for all the fans that were invested in Season 1…there’s some real payoffs we’re putting in place in Season 2 because we’ve had that time to get to know the characters and to get to know their backstories and now we see that it’s all even more complicated than we thought.”

Aside from learning more about what’s going on in the town of Millwood and more about the leftover Season 1 mysteries that still need to be solved, fans will also get to learn more about the characters themselves.

“We’re in the middle of filming the second season right now and we start to get a bit more into Billy’s childhood then, but that’s a ways down the line,” he said, when chatting back in July. “But we get a sense of what it was like for [Billy and Joanna] growing up and how far they’ve come and how different it is for them coming back together.”

A press release from CBC about Season 2 gave even more insight into the storyline for the new “Burden of Truth” episodes.

“This season [Joanna] finds herself at a top law firm in Winnipeg ready to make a fresh start away from her previous firm,” the synopsis begins. “There, a new client draws her into the shadowy world of hackers, activists and a political movement that won’t take any prisoners. The case leads Joanna through many twists and turns, until she eventually becomes a killer’s target. Her estranged father tries to assist her, which leads to an event that will change both their lives forever.”

The synopsis continued: “Meanwhile, Millwood’s lifeblood has been left depleted following the bankruptcy of the mill. With rising unemployment rates, tensions in town are running high, leaving Billy to retreat further away from town, but when his reckless brother Shane shows up, Billy is forced to confront childhood memories.”
