In an age where no film seems off-limits to being revisited in some manner, Kubrick’s seminal classic, “The Shining,” is no exception. And Warner Bros. offered a first look at the loose sequel in the first trailer for “Doctor Sleep.”

Directed by Mike Flanagan, the film is based on Stephen King’s 2013 book of the same title and follows Danny Torrance years after the events of “The Shining.” Danny is now an adult and trying to live in relative peace, which is shattered when he discovers his connection to the young Abra Stone, who has her own “shine.”

The trailer introduces viewers to the adult Danny, played by Ewan McGregor, who has succumbed to the same drinking and anger issues that plagued his father and led to the events of “The Shining.” That all changes when he begins receiving messages on his wall, likely from Abra, before the wall cracks and spells out the infamous word – REDRUM.

After seeing it, he sets out to meet Abra to discover why they are connected.

Also introduced in the trailer is Rebecca Ferguson’s Rose the Hat, who leads a dangerous group of “shiners,” called The True Knot. The group feeds on an essence known as “steam” that people who “shine” release when they die painfully. They begin to sense how powerful Abra is and set out to find her so as to feed off her abilities and live forever.

While already moody, Flanagan doesn’t shy away from references to Kubrick’s film, either. At multiple points, the trailer cuts back to some of “The Shining’s” more famous imagery, including the bloody elevators. The trailer even ends with a callback to Nicholson’s famous “Here’s Johnny” scene as Danny begins to stick his face through the hole his father chopped into the door.

“Doctor Sleep” is scheduled for release on November 8, 2019.
