Jedec Solid State Technology Association, which sets the industrial standard for RAM for both PCs and smartphones, announced Thursday the DDR5 RAM, which will be the next generation of the current DDR4 RAM. According to Jedec, DDR5 will have significant memory improvements compared to previous RAMs used in devices.

“DDR5 memory will offer improved performance with greater power efficiency as compared to previous-generation DRAM technologies. As planned, DDR5 will provide double the bandwidth and density over DDR4, along with delivering improved channel efficiency. These enhancements, combined with a more user-friendly interface for server and client platforms, will enable high performance and improved power management in a wide variety of applications,” Jedec said in a news release Thursday.

DDR5 RAM has double the bandwidth and density of DDR4 RAM, which makes it faster and more battery efficient. It is likely to make its way to high-end gaming PCs first and then gradually to other PCs and finally, smartphones.

In short, with DDR5, the universal standard for RAMs will become better. So you will have PCs and smartphones with twice as much computational power. Currently, flagship smartphones come with 4GB RAM on average, which is more than the average RAM on PCs. However, there are limitations as the size of an average smartphone limits the amount of RAM that can be fitted into it, which, in turn limits the maximum processing power you can endow such a device with.

However, with DDR5 RAM, you will get more processing power from the same RAM as previous standards, which will make your smartphone more powerful, faster and battery efficient. In all, the better the RAM, the more efficient your smartphone will be.

Jedec says that the DDR5 standards will be published in 2018, so it won’t be ready too soon. But whenever it comes, it is expected to make the functioning of both smartphones and PCs more efficient.
