A man from Denver was charged on Tuesday with first-degree murder following the death of his girlfriend at home near Pennsylvania Street and Ellsworth Avenue.

The Denver police then responded to a 911 call of a shooting shortly before midnight last Thursday. They later stated they would be treating the scene as a death investigation, related to a domestic issue.

The affidavit released on Tuesday claimed the Micah Kimball, was arrested hours after the death of his girlfriend, Michelle Jacobson. He was charged with the counts on Tuesday, which happens to be the first day of domestic violence awareness month.

When Jacobson was found, she had a gunshot wound to the head, according to the court records. There were no apparent wounds to the face of the victim.

The investigation thus far suggests she may not have committed suicide. The hypothesis suggests she was shot at an angle that would not be a natural position for an individual to shoot themselves.

Jessica Rose Paetsch, a close friend of the victim, said it was devastating. She had planned to meet up with Jacobson on the day of her murder.

The reason police took Kimball into custody was his statements given after the police arrived on the scene varied from what he said to the 911 dispatch. The affidavit claims he told the dispatcher they were playing with the gun when it went off.

When the authorities arrived, he told them he was in the kitchen when he heard the gun go off. He later said that he and his fiancé were arguing, and she broke a window.

She then allegedly went upstairs to the bedroom to get the weapon and load it because he showed her how to do it.

Kimball denied shooting her, though even when interrogated by the detectives.

One of the witnesses at the scene told detectives she heard loud banging and a man yelling. There was a woman's voice as well, though; she was crying.

She said Kimball went into a shed in the backyard and heard a woman screaming that he was hurting her. She also heard the woman throwing her body against the side of the shed after Kimball left.

Court records currently show he was involved in a divorce case in 2015, and he had DUI conviction this year in Routt County.

Kimball is now being held without bond after the appearance he made on Tuesday. The cause and manner of Jacobson's death are pending though, Kimball is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
