KEY POINTS

  • The Wellspring is a six-player matchmade activity on the Throne World
  • The activity rewards players with Throne World weapons and armor
  • Wellspring alternates between Attack and Defend game modes daily

Among the many new activities of “Destiny 2” in “The Witch Queen” and “Season of the Risen,” the Wellspring stands out as one of the game’s more interesting additions.

Instead of having a new six-player Seasonal activity, Bungie decided to relegate that role to the Wellspring, which pits a raid team against the Hive and Scorn in a short scuffle in one of the Throne World’s most important structures.

Players will need to finish the entire “Witch Queen” campaign before they can access this activity, which makes sense as far as the story goes, but it feels like a missed opportunity that could have let people grind for gear early on.

The Wellspring has two main game modes: Attack and Defend. When attacking, Guardians must push through swarms of Hive while escorting a levitating “Team Fortress”-style payload cart to breach a reinforced gate leading to the titular Wellspring. The Guardians must then disrupt this ritual in a quick, multi-phase boss fight that will ultimately reward them with some Throne World loot.

Defending the Wellspring is the same gig, except players will start on the Wellspring itself and work their way back to the main entryway while chasing off Scorn. There’s no payload this time around, but the mob density is higher.

The Wellspring rotates between Attack and Defend objectives every day, and so do the weapon rewards. Check back frequently to see what weapon and armor piece drops from the Wellspring for the sake of earning collection pieces and unlocking Enclave weapon blueprints.

Later in the game, players can get access to tougher Wellspring difficulties by reaching Rank 18 with Fynch at the Quagmire. This should increase the chances of getting weapon drop, making the activity the perfect way to earn Throne World weapons with Resonance objectives. At the very least, harder modes should make Wellspring more fun, as the default difficulty setting is way too easy for a group of six Guardians.

Completing the Wellspring is required for one of the Investigation Board jobs. Make sure to complete all of the jobs listed there to unlock the quest for the class-specific exotic glaives.
